Importance of Interoperability

Interoperability allows two geographers, using two different programs communicate with one another. This opens the door to a larger range of communication and a better, more quality product.

Interoperability is good for software business. Any business entering the free market has a fair shot to succeed. If the new program can read the standard file types, the program is at no disadvantage to existing programs.

Standards mean that a company can change software and not have to debug or transform file types. This allows companies to get back to work quicker. Easy software change puts a check on large software companies so they continue to produce quality software.

Interoperability makes it easier for the consumer. The consumer doesn't have to worry about whether the software will read a file. He or she knows it will. And the same file will look the same on all platforms.
